July 2012

What's new with Lorie?

Ashkenaz Festival 2012

I'm pleased to be part of this year's Ashkenaz Festival with a brand new production called "Todie and the Miser", an theatrical adaptation of a short story written, of course by my literary hero Isaac Bashevis Singer.

On Sunday, September 2nd (time and place TBA), join shrewd Todie, the town’s ne’er-do-well, as he teaches Lyzer the Miser, the stingiest, cheapest man in the shtetl, a lesson about generosity that he’ll never forget! This classic folk tale as retold by Isaac Bashevis Singer in his book “Stories for Children” comes to life on stage with lots of laughs and live klezmer music.

Joining our production once again is the lively Geoff Kolomayz and we don't know which of the two characters he's playing yet; he'll have to duke that one out with Stevie Jay.  In our klezmer band we'll find Mr. Peter Lutek, and of course, I'll be playing the poik (marching bass drum) and...there maybe a couple more surprises up my sleeve.

Mariposa-in-the-Schools

As a joint production with the Ashkenaz Foundation school outreach program, Mazel and Schlimazel is now featured in the Marioposa-in-the-Schools catalogue.  We are available for school performances throughout the year.

There will be more information and pictures about these two updates coming soon!

Thanks to everyone who came out to see Mazel and Schlimazel!  Please go to the Mazel and Schlimazel link of the right to see some pics and download the press kit.  Here's a picture  to get you started..

The New Dull-Eyed Llamas CD has finally been released!

IF YOU  WANNA KNOW is DEL's first studio recording.  The Dull-Eyed Llamas are an eclectic pop band with influences as diverse as klezmer, punk, jazz and folk. Fascinated by different musical genres, songwriter Ariel Brink constantly attempts to expand on the band’s colourful sound, an ambition aided by the presence of an accordionist and saxophonist. His catchy songs are upbeat, soulful, irreverent and intelligent—sometimes all four at once—and range in subject from traditional tales of love to songs about rocks, religion, thunderstorms, alcohol and jam.

Ariel Brink was already a seasoned singer/songwriter when he joined forces with guitar virtuoso and bassist Avital Zemer in August of 2005. As MurMur, they played in cafes around Toronto, delighting audiences with their unusual lyrics and upbeat sound. Despite Brink's repeated inability to recognize her, award-winning drummer Lorie Wolf joined the band in early 2007. The talented Mike Landoni added tenor sax (and clarinet and flute) to the mix in October of that year, and the band played their first gig as “The Dull-Eyed Llamas”. Finally, entranced by harmonies at a Concord Café gig, accordionist-about-town Ronen Segal joined the crew in April of 2008.

The Sisters of Sheynville were named "Vocal Group of the Year" at the Canadian Folk Music Awards last night in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Sisters of Sheynville revitalize Yiddish swing and klezmer music from the golden age of the mid-20th century fused with contemporary jazz. Formed in 2005 and inspired by the Barry Sisters’ Yiddish swing vocals of the 30’s and 40’s, this high-energy, all-female sextet features intricate three-part vocal harmony supported by a fire-y ensemble of some of Toronto’s leading jazz and klezmer instrumentalists.

The Sisters are now reaching audiences far beyond the mythical city of Sheynville. The release of Sheynville Express has led to appearances in major Jewish festivals in Washington and Winnipeg and at Toronto’s Ashkenaz Festival and NXNE in 2008. They have begun the 2009 season with bookings in Los Angeles, Vancouver, San Francisco and San Diego.

The Sisters are: Lenka Lichtenberg (vocals), Isabel Fryszberg (vocals); Fern Lindzon (piano, vocals); Kinneret Sagee (clarinet); Rachel Melas (double bass); Lorie Wolf (drums).

Here is a list of all of last night’s winners:
